More classes, a workshop, and a reception!

...been too long since I last updated things.....am back on track now, with a busy upcoming winter and spring schedule.

Just announced: A one-day intensive workshop at The Art School in Sandy Springs,  being held on Saturday March 1st. Details can be found by clicking the school reference on the sidebar.  This is for Landscapes in Oils.  Levels from early intermediate to advanced.  Sign up early to hold a place. Should be a great time! This will be at our new location.....and, by the way....

Youre invited to the Grand Opening of the new location for The Art School in Sandy Springs, on the evening of February 21st, from 5pm-8pm.!!  There will be teacher demonstrations, snacks and drinks, and an all around good time. A great occasion for you to check out the new larger facility and get some info on the classes. I plan to be demonstrating that evening....hope to see you there! Even if youve taken classes in the past, it will be a fun time to see you again, and give you a chance to check things out.  Its not far from the current place....just a few blocks up Roswell Road, outside the perimter fwy, and just a quick turn onto Sandy Springs Circle from Roswell Rd.

The new location:  330 Sandy Springs Circle, Atlanta, GA 30328
(no change to the contact, email, web info)

My begnning oil painting class at The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art starts this coming Tuesday, February 4th (5:30PM-8:30PM).  Class is getting near full, but still a few spots left. Details also available via the sidebar link.
Then in March, my regular Sandy Springs class starts again on Monday, March 3rd, (at the new location), and my regular Marietta Cobb Museum class starts again on Tuesday night,  March 18th.  Both of these are early intermediate-advanced level. Both, again, are for Landscapes in oil. Please feel free to contact me if any questions regarding these opportunities.

...looking forward to April,  as I will be on my way to the Southeastern Plein Air Festival in Alabama and then the WinterPark/Florida Plein Air Festival, with other festivals planned in May, June, and July. Cant wait for the fun to begin.

Above is a  tonal painting of a  farm area near where I live.  Below that a piece from my recent trip to Santa Barbara, this past December.  A familliar scene at nearby Goleta Beach, I always enjoy painting this particular view. Stay tuned....I will be loading a few more images from that painting trip shortly.

Best wishes!

Hurry!!....class begins January 6th!!!

Hello all

A reminder to hurry and sign up for my Monday morning painting class, which starts January 6th, at The Art School at Sandy Springs.

During the holiday season one can get caught up in so many activities, and forget things;  and this class follows quite soon after Christmas, so plan ahead to sign up soon, so you dont miss out!

Click on the website, on the right side of the blog, for Art School at Sandy Springs to register.

It runs for six Mondays, from 9:30am to 12:30pm.  This is a studio oil painting class, with an emphasis on landscape. We gear things toward advanced beginners, intermediate and advanced. We explore concepts that will lead you towards more professional results in your painting; concepts that are unique and not always covered in other classes you may take.  If youve taken the class before, Id be pleased to see you again; as we always explore new concepts and new subject matter.

See you there!

Happy Thanksgiving!

John

back in time

Above is a large commission piece (24x36) from about 2 years ago.  Just thought I would review it a bit.  As is often the case, a commission piece comes out a bit stiffer and more sharped edged than my typical work, since there are so many specific things the client desires to see referenced, and that starts to turn it more into an illustration versus a painting. My initial plein air sketch idea is below. Difference is distinct, wouldnt you agree?

Plein Air II

a few plein air pieces from this past week ....the lake scene was painted in about 45 minutes during my Monday plein air class at a lake park near Atlanta. The other two (garden and mill stone scene) were painted in a farm area south of Atlanta while visiting and painting with friend, Sam Traina, an excellent studio and plein air artist who has a big spread out there.

a few plein air paintings

...painted with some friends this past Friday up in Dahlonega, a picturesque area in the nearby Georgia mountains.  Heres a few 16x20 pieces painted that day. (the red chimney one is a  1 hour demo from my workshop the previous weekend at the Museum of Art in Gadsden, Alabama.)

Old Marietta Depot

Above is a recent commission painting of the old Marietta depot, (which now houses the welcome center of Marietta).  Paintings with a variety of reds and greens seem to work pretty well, color-wise, I think. They seem to give off good color vibrations. Wasnt that an old Beach Boys song?...hmm, not sure....yup, i checked; that was it.
Usually i find less success if the painting has a dominant color theme of the other color complementary combos, like purple/yellow or blue/orange.  Interesting.
